🚫 What Not to Do With Your Nintendo Switch 2 (To Avoid Getting Banned)
The Nintendo Switch 2 officially launched on June 5, and while it’s an exciting upgrade, it’s also not the most budget-friendly console out there. With games priced up to $80, it’s no surprise that many gamers—including myself—are trying to find the best deals.
I’ve always bought most of my games pre-owned—from GameStop, eBay, OfferUp—you name it. Never had an issue... until now.The Switch 2 comes with stricter anti-piracy measures, and unfortunately, some users are getting banned even when they haven’t done anything shady on purpose.
Let me explain what’s happening—and what you should avoid.
⚠️ Be Careful Buying Used Games (Especially for Switch 2)
Buying a used game doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get banned. But here’s the issue: if the person you bought it from ripped or duplicated the cartridge—or bought it from someone who did—Nintendo can detect this when both consoles go online. The result? Both consoles may get banned.
That’s what happened to a Reddit user who bought a game from Facebook Marketplace. He didn’t pirate anything, but someone in the game’s “history” did.
Tip: Stick to well-known or verified sellers. Even then, there’s a risk—so be mindful. If this happens to you, try contacting Nintendo Support to appeal.
🛑 Avoid Using MIG Flash Carts—Even With Your Own Games
This one hurts to say because I’ve used flash carts like the MIG Switch Cartridge before—to back up my own games. On the original Switch, no problem, but on the Switch 2, it’s a major red flag.
Users have reported permanent bans even when using legal backups of games they already own. Nintendo seems to detect the MIG cartridge as unofficial hardware, especially when you connect online.
My advice? Don’t insert any MIG cartridge into your Switch 2—even if you're offline. If you must use it, keep it strictly on your older Switch and always in airplane mode.
And yeah... it’s a bummer. 😔
I actually like using the MIG cart—it’s way more convenient than carrying all my game cartridges around, especially while traveling. But with the Switch 2 being so strict, it’s just not worth risking a ban over it.
📜 Remember: You Don’t Own the Switch 2—You License It
According to Nintendo’s own User Agreement for the Switch 2, you’re not the full owner of the device. You’re actually licensed to use it under their terms—which gives them the right to restrict your access if rules are broken. 🔗 Read the full user agreement here
This is why being banned doesn’t just block online features—it may also limit access to some games and services you've already paid for.
✅ Final Tips to Stay Safe:
Buy used games only from trusted sellers
Don’t use MIG cartridges or any unofficial hardware
Avoid modifying your Switch 2 (even if it's for backups)
If something feels off—don’t risk it
